TUESDAY TALK WELCOMES TARA MELANIE KERR

This morning I would like to welcome Tara Melanie Kerr.  Not only  has she written a prequel to Pride and Prejudice, her life is very much involved in all things Regency.  In her words..’sewing her own petticoats and dreaming of Colin Firth.’

First of all, my usual opening question – tell us a little about you

Kerr MelanieI  studied linguistics, English and theatre at the University of British Columbia and law at the University of Alberta. I am a reckless lover of clotted cream, a staunch defender of the semi-colon and a fierce opponent of unpleasant music.I proudly live in Edmonton, Canada, where I raise my three babies, sew my own Regency costumes, organise Regency costume events, blog on all things old and English, endeavour to take over the world and occasionally practice law. I also write novels inspired by my love of Jane Austen.

When did you first become interested in the Regency Period and Jane Austen?

15 years ago, I was introduced to Jane Austen and the channel for all my interests became clear, for in her work, drama, make-believe and grammar came together in a charming, intelligent and escapist way that captivated my imagination. I have been sewing my own petticoats and dreaming of Colin Firth ever since.

Is there an official society for Jane Austen and all things Regency in Canada?

The Jane Austen Society of North America fills that role in the US and Canada, though they are particularly focused on the works of Jane Austen, and by extension the Regency period. I attend their local chapter meetings here in Edmonton when I can. Otherwise, I think there is basically just me (see answer below).

Earlier this year you organised The Calgary Regency Springtime Ball.  Do you organise many events like this and if so, who attends?

This was actually the third ball I have put on. The first two were in Edmonton, and it was due to their success that we thought we would try expanding to Calgary. Last year, I thought it would be fun to see if I could pull off a Regency costume ball, complete with English country dancing and live music and cards, all in period costume. It wasn’t sure how it would go, but it was so popular, we had to expand into a larger ball room! Since then I have tried other events as well, including a murder mystery and garden promenade under the trade name Regency Encouters (www.RegencyEncounters.com). We are holding another ball in Edmonton this September as well.

At this event where were the costumes hired from?  And in the case of the ladies were any dresses made by the wearers?

I was really impressed with how people got into the costuming actually. Many people made their own entirely from scratch, and to a really high standard. I have a small stock of costumes from attending the Jane Austen festival in Bath a few times several years ago, and I rent them out as well. People also custom order their outfits from local costumiers. I even had one person order a gown from the UK. Although dress code is strictly Regency, I allow anything that comes close, including reinvented modern clothing, and I post videos on my YouTube channel (https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCIn1Mil6l-w4f3pPD9wm6WA)of how to get a Regency look without any sewing skill or budget.

You have written a prequel to Pride and Prejudice – Follies Past.  What made you decide to undertake a project like this?

Book Cover Brown smallEssentially, it was a book I wanted to read. I had tried reading a few of the more popular Fan Fiction novels, and they just were not what I was looking for, so I decided to write it myself. One of the great things about Jane Austen’s storytelling is the way she ties everything up into a deeply satisfying ending. We all want the books to go on and on, but extending the characters and the plot after the final chapter felt to me like interfering with that perfect ending. And it would all have to be speculative. Nobody knows what happens after the close of a book, but Jane Austen herself tells us what happened before Pride and Prejudice. In Darcy’s letter to Elizabeth, setting out all his dealings with Mr. Wickham, Austen gives us that history, and on that foundation, I built my novel, Follies Past.

I thought if I extended the story backwards in time, I would be able to explore more of her world, spend more time with her characters and create the experience I longed for as a reader, but without offending anyone’s ideas about what might have happened. Everyone ends up exactly as they are at the start of P&P.  Also, I love the history of things. I love the depth that a prequel can give to an original story, not that P&P needs anything from me, but just to expand on the back-story, to delve into the history, felt really exciting.

The book also contains a story of its own, to create the arc and structure of a Jane Austen novel, the kind of plot that I, myself, like to read. Because everyone knows how the Wickham and Georgiana story ends, I have woven it with another story with some mystery and drama to keep the pages turning.

Have you any plans to write another book?  If so, will it be linked with another Jane Austen novel?

I am actually in the middle of writing my next book. I had planned to write another Jane Austen prequel, this time to Sense and Sensibility, but I was approached by a publisher soliciting a submission of a manuscript like Follies Past in style, theme and tone, but not fan fiction. I agreed to write one for them, and that is what I am working on. It is called Mary Green and should be released next March. It is set in Regency England, and is written in the language of the period. It is the story of an orphan who is raised by a wealthy family but must strike out on her own and find her own happiness.

And lastly, if you found yourself shipwrecked on a desert island, what four things would you want to have with you and why?

Aside from the basics of survival, like water and food, I would say firstly a couch. I always need a couch. Secondly company. I won’t be too specific, but I would need company, good company. Maybe that’s cheating, because it’s meant to be a desert island, but really, nothing else would help me if I didn’t have people around. Third, a dairy cow and fourth cake.

SYNOPSIS FOR FOLLIES PAST

Caroline Bingley is convinced of Mr. Darcy’s affection and determined to convert his regard into advantageous matrimony as swiftly as propriety will allow. Young Georgiana Darcy has just been taken from the innocent seclusion of her country school, and is about to be sent off to face the rigours of town, to complete her education in all the ways of society before entering upon it. Mr. Darcy intends an alliance between his young charge and his closest and most affable companion, Mr. Bingley, who, in all his self-effacement, betrays no knowledge of the scheme. Colonel Fitzwilliam has his own ideas about Georgiana’s future, while Lady Catherine regards the whole affair with all the disdain and suspicion befitting of her rank.

As the cast turn their faces to London, to that mire of all things perilous and enticing in the way of public balls and morning calls, one gentleman awaits them with all the charm and breeding that a handsome face and merciless ambition can beget.

200 years after the publication of Pride and Prejudice, this new novel treats readers to the complete and dramatic history of Mr. Darcy and Mr. Wickham.  To read it is to step back into the charming world of Jane Austen’s England, to pass a few more hours with some of her beloved characters, sympathetically portrayed as they might have been before ever they came to Netherfield. With language convincingly reminiscent of Austen herself, and a meticulously-researched Regency setting, Follies Past is the book Austen fans have been waiting for.

Praise for Follies Past

“Kerr manages to evoke the essence of Jane Austen in the first sentence of this book, and carries it through to a satisfying ending with humour, intelligence and heart-warming characterisation…. The language is exquisite, and so Austen-like I found it hard to differentiate between them.” Historical Novel Review

“…by far the best Austen spin off I’ve had the pleasure of reading… a novel that reads like one of Austen’s own making… Kerr does an excellent job of taking the small tidbits of information we know about characters and giving them a full and lush back story without straying from our vision of them… beautiful and brilliant, and I cannot imagine an Austen fan who would not love it.” Anakalian Whims

“Well-written and extensively researched, Kerr captures the essence and style of nineteenth century England… While there are many prequels and sequels relating to Jane Austen’s classics, Follies Past is one I heartily recommend reading!” Compass Book Ratings

“…admirably maintains the tone and tenor of Austen’s original work, her bygone era lovingly resurrected with an infallible eye for detail and a keen ear for dialogue… a genuine joy to read… There is the jocularity, craving and indulgence that attests to the timeless allure of Austen.” Book Viral

“From the first two paragraphs it was clear to me that I was to become a captive audience. The language was beautiful and very similar to Austen’s…  a fast read and what a delightful fast read.” Bibliobetty Reviews

TODAY TUESDAY TALK WELCOMES JANE DIXON SMITH

Today I’m pleased to welcome Jane Dixon Smith – not only a talented book designer but a novelist as well.

Signing Bio PhotoTell us a bit about you…

I’m first and foremost a book designer, having been in the graphic design industry my whole life. It was a surprise to end up here, but then it shouldn’t have been since I’ve been a writer almost as long as I’ve been a designer. The two eventually merged and I’m very glad they did. I’m also very lucky to live in the Lake District surrounded by such beautiful countryside and tea and cake shops!

How did J D Smith – Design come about and what services does it offer?

I design book covers and also specialise in interior formatting of both fiction and non-fiction books. I also design various accompaniments, such as flyers, bookmarks, posters and so on. I used to manage a design studio for a number of years, but when eventually the structure of the company changed and the office closed, I began working on a freelance basis. Knowing so many writers meant that work came mainly from them, and it wasn’t long before I was working almost exclusively on books.

What is a typical day for you?

Well I live right next door to the school my three children attend, so once they’re fed and dressed it’s a quick drop off and I’m back home putting the kettle on. So, despite them starting school at 8.50, I’m usually sat back at my desk with a cup of tea by 9am. Then it’s replying to emails, working on covers, sourcing images, making amendments and so on until 3.15 when I pick them back up again. Then I work for a couple of hours in the evening when they’re in bed and the house it quiet once more. It Tristan and Iseult Cover MEDIUMworks well because it’s flexible.

Does living in the Lake District give you inspiration for your work?

Not really. I’ve written both about Syria, Rome, Egypt, Cornwall and Ireland. But not about here. I think it inspires my general love of history, though. I’m a real fan of everything historical and the Lake District offers a lot of untapped history and beauty.

What made you decide to add writing to your list of talents?

I love stories and immersing myself in the worlds my characters inhabit. I don’t think it’s a decision so much as a place I’m simply drawn to and enjoy.

The Rise of Zenobia Cover EBOOK2You’ve written historical novels. What are your future plans?

I’m still writing historical novels! I first wrote Tristan and Iseult, which became a finalist in the Historical Novel Society Indie Book of the Year Awards 2015. And then I published the first three books in the Overlord series, based on the Palmyrene Queen Zenobia, who defied Rome. There’s another three to go so that’s going to keep me busy for a while I should think.

Would you ever consider another genre and if so, what and why?

No, never. I love history too much. I suppose I’ve considered moving back and forth in time, and flitting a little between romantic history and the more brutal war themed, but that’s all.

And now, the dreaded dinner party, question. You’re the hostess and can invite four guests. Who would they be?

I was asked this question recently and I said I’d invite my fellow Triskele Books authors: Jill, Gilly, Kat, Batty , Liza and Barbara. That’s six though? They’ll have to share seats. The Love of Julius Cover LARGE EBOOK

BROOK COTTAGE BOOK TOUR: FLUENCE BY STEPHEN ORAM, 6 – 17 JULY 2015

Fluence Tour BannerFLUENCE

Ten thousand minutes and counting

Fluence Cover Reveal_300dpi

By Stephen Oram

Genre: Dystopian

Published by Silverwood Books

Amber is young and ambitious. Martin is burnt out by years of struggling. She cheats to get what she wants while he barely clings on to what he has. It’s the week before the annual Pay Day when strata positions are decided by the controlling corporations. The social media feed is frenetic with people trying to boost their influence rating while those above the strata and those who’ve opted out pursue their own manipulative goals.

Fluence is a story of aspiration and desperation and of power seen and unseen. It’s a story of control and consequence. It’s the story of the extremes to which Amber and Martin are prepared to go in these last ten thousand minutes before Pay Day.

MY REVIEW

This was a very thought provoking read.  Here we have an imagined world (not so far away from the one we currently live in) where individuals compete on social media for Fluence points.  At the end of the year scores are then added up and colour graded according to the number of points achieved. The colour an individual is awarded is fixed for a year and dictates their social status and class. It controls every aspect of their lives, including where they live and who they socialise with

Amber and Martin work at the same place – the Bureaucracy – as part of a disability assessment team. Their job is to determine whether people are fit to work, or if they need to be supported by the government.  There are Fluence points to be gained for good job performance, keeping those disability figures down – so there’s a conflict of conscience straight away. Gain points by reducing the numbers on government support, or make an honest assessment to assist those less fortunate.

Amber is both knowledgeable of how the system works and very focussed.  She plays to win, her only goal to increase her colour level and social status within society.  Martin, however, is tired of the game, happy to stay in Green but concerned his score is currently in freefall.  He is struggling.

The story, although central to these two characters who are at different ends of their game, also shows the bigger picture. Here we have a world where people are pitched against each other.. One man’s rise means another man’s downfall. At the end of the day if being  a winner is to the detriment of someone else – can your conscience live with this?  Or has the system conditioned you not to care?

I would like to thank the author for providing a free copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

Stephen Oram 1M

Like each and every one of us, my perspective of the world has been affected by many people and experiences: as a teenager I was heavily influenced by the ethos of punk; in my early twenties I embraced the squatter scene and then joined a religious cult, briefly; I did some computer stuff in what became London’s silicon roundabout; and I’m now a civil servant with a gentle attraction to anarchism. I really enjoy taking a sideways look at our world and thinking, “what if,” and then writing about it through speculative fiction.

TUESDAY TALK PRESENTS: ELAINE DENNING

Today I have editor Elaine Denning in the spotlight, talking about her likes, dislikes, virtual dinner guests and her passion for editing…

moi

Firstly, tell us a little bit about you…

Ah! The dreaded question! Well, I’m  on the wrong side of forty and live with two mad cats and a wonderful lodger called Martin, a stone’s throw from the south coast in Devon. My son, Dan, is 26 and the best thing that ever happened to me. I have a passion for everything creative – art, photography, music, theatre, and writing. I love German wine, oozy pasta sauces, and being barefoot. I hate spiders, celery, and people who drain their cutlery the wrong way around. Martin says the worst thing about me is that I drain my cutlery the wrong way around.

What brought you into the editing world?

A few years ago when a good friend of mine was blogging his experiences of an absolutely horrific time he spent on holiday in Spain, I encouraged him to self-publish a book about it, which I edited for him.  I’ve always been an avid reader, writer, and (shamefully) a grammar Nazi, so you could say that the passion to be in this line of work has always been with me. At first I started working as a copywriter and editor part-time, squeezing it in at the end of my day, but then I took the leap, left my job, and set up my own business. I haven’t looked back.

What is a typical day for you…if there is one…

It usually involves a mug or two of black, decaf coffee, whilst checking emails and getting my Facebook fix before I start work.  I’m usually in full editing flow by eight and finish by four, although sometimes there are interruptions (neighbours visiting, phone calls, cats wanting belly rubs). The hardest thing about working from home is trying to convince people that I do, actually, have a job to do! If my day has too many interruptions I’ll have an early night and will be up and at it by three the following morning. That’s the best time for me – when the whole world is asleep and I can completely immerse myself in my work. In the evenings I like to sit in the garden, read a book, drink some wine, listen to some music, and generally chill out. My life isn’t very exciting these days but it makes me happy.

Who is your favourite author and why?

I don’t have a favourite author but I certainly have my eye on Tony Parsons again after his decision to venture into crime writing. I loved the emotional power of Man and Boy, love the way he structures sentences, and how he gets away with breaking the rules by doing a whole lot of ‘telling’ instead of ‘showing’.  (I do admire authors who aren’t scared of breaking the rules.) Dorothy Koomson is another author who, in my opinion, is an expert at writing page-turners. I’ve enjoyed all of her books.

If you were to contemplate writing a book which genre would you choose and why?

I have several unfinished manuscripts tucked away in the bowels of my laptop but have no desire to revisit them. Editing really does satisfy the need in me to be immersed in words, so the fact they belong to someone else is irrelevant.  However, if I had the urge to embark on a writing career, my first book would be a psychological thriller. I love the tension and suspense, plot twists, and feeling slightly anxious and unsure of things when I’m reading books in that genre. I studied psychology for a year with the Open University and am fascinated by people and why they do the things they do. I’ve watched more documentaries about psychopaths than I care to admit!

If you were holding a dinner party and could invite four guests, who would they be and why?

My family, obviously, but that’s not a very interesting answer! So, leaving them aside, my first guest would be Jesus, just to see if he actually showed up. If he did, I’d have some serious re-thinking to do.  My second guest would be David Blaine because if Jesus actually succeeded in turning my tap water into wine, I’m sure David would say “I can do that, mate” and then we’d have twice as much to drink.  I’d need someone who could entertain us with a song or two, so Freddie Mercury would fit the bill nicely. (Also, I’d like to see if Jesus would actually leave the table if he was sharing it with a gay man.)  My last guest would be Peter Kaye because he makes me laugh and I think he’d help me with the dishes.

BROOK COTTAGE BOOKS BOOK TOUR: THE LAST GATEKEEPER BY KATY HAYE 6 – 19TH JULY 2015

The Last Gatekeeper Tour Banner

Zan knows she’s different. Today she discovers why …

Zanzibar MacKenzie knows she’s a freak. She has EHS – electrical hypersensitivity – which leaves her trying to live a Stone Age life in the twenty-first century: no internet, no phone, no point really. Then Thanriel knocks on her door and the dull summer holiday becomes maybe too exciting. Zan discovers fairies and angels are real beings from other planets, she herself is half alien, and the future of life on Earth rests on her shoulders.

This book is the first of the Chronicles of Fane series.

 MY REVIEW

The story begins on Zan Mackenzie’s  seventeenth birthday when after a row with her mother, her father allows her to slip away to the beach to meet her friend Em and her boyfriend Jamie. On her return she finds her father unconscious and her mother missing and is confronted by the mysterious, otherworldly Thanriel  (an angel) who explains that like her mother, she is a fane, or fairy. She is also a Gatekeeper and he has come to  help her use her powers to save the world from destruction.  Her task is to close the three gates between the Fane’s world and earth.

This amazing book, written from Zan’s viewpoint, deals with so many different issues.  Firstly there is the classic battle between good and evil.  Then there is Zan herself; young, inexperienced and trying to cope with so many fresh challenges in her life –  her newly discovered  fane powers, her developing attraction to Thanriel and, of course, the responsibility for saving the world.  I was hooked from page one and really loved Zan’s character – she’s smart and feisty and of course, the gorgeous Thanriel leaves you  breathless.  By the time I had finished, all I could think about was what was going to happen to Zan and Thanriel in the next book.  A very worthy five star read with great potential as a movie!

I would like to thank the author for donating a copy of the book in exchange for a fair and  unbiased review

BROOK COTTAGE BOOK TOUR: HEALED BY LOVE BY MELISSA FOSTER 15 – 26 JUNE, 2015

Healed by Love Tour Banner

HEALED BY LOVE

The Bradens (at Peaceful Harbor)

The Bradens at Peaceful Harbor are the newest addition to the award-winning Braden series and the Love in Bloom family, joining the Snow Sisters, the Bradens, the Remingtons, & Seaside Summers, (Voted BEST BOOK SERIES by Supportive Business Moms, UK).

HealedByLove-FINAL-266x400

Fall in love with Nate Braden & Jewel Fisher in Healed by Love.

Nate Braden has loved his best friend’s younger sister Jewel for as long as he can remember, but between their age difference and his respect for Rick, he’s always kept his feelings at bay. Now he’s back in Peaceful Harbor, and Jewel is no longer sixteen years old—but there’s an even bigger obstacle standing in his way. Nate and Rick joined the military together eight years earlier. Nate came home a hero, but Rick didn’t make it out alive.

MY REVIEW

It’s always a pleasure to join a book tour featuring one of Melissa Foster’s new titles and this is no exception.  When best friends Nate Braden and Rick Fisher join the army and depart for Afghanistan, Rick’s sixteen year old sister Jewel is left with the indelible memory of Nate’s kiss.  Six years later Nate is back…without Rick.  Jewel realises her feelings for her brother’s best friend are still as strong.  The family have been through a tough time; not only has their brother been a casualty of war,  their father has also been killed in a fishing accident.  As the Fisher family pull together in the aftermath of this double tragedy, Jewel has stepped in to help her mother with the younger siblings.

Nate too is suffering; not only has he lost the best friend he grew up with, he feels guilty that he is the one who came home alive.  But worse still, he is living with the knowledge he  gave the order for Rick to go on the supply run which saw him shot and killed by a sniper.

There are so many emotions in this book.  I loved Nate; he was honourable, kind and, of course, very sexy. Just the kind of guy you want to fall in love with.   Jewel longs to be with him but is unable to understand why he seems to be reluctant to move beyond friendship with her.

When Nate decides to open up to Jewel and tell her what happened in Afghanistan he believes his honesty will solve their problem.  That he will be rid of the one barrier keeping them from being together. That Jewel will understand.  Unfortunately his honesty backfires badly.

This story is about forgiveness and understanding.  It’s sad at times, a reflection on how war can alter and impair lives. Like Melissa’s other books you find yourself wanting to climb into the pages and help these star crossed lovers solve their problems.  A great read and highly recommended.  I can’t wait for the next part of the series.

I would like to thank the author for a complimentary copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.

ALMOST THERE…

thU3HW0ZSYIt’s party time – well not quite.  I’m holding off breaking out the bubbly for a few more weeks.  The good news is, however, that Summer Moved On is finished at last.  It’s been a long hard slog but eventually, with the help of my brilliant editor Elaine Denning, it’s all come together.

This book was difficult to write probably because the last five were all connected.  As a series of books following the lives and loves of several families writing each book came with an already established cast and setting.  OK as the years rolled on we were introduced to new members of the family, but there were always the original characters in the background to provide structure and familiarity.  Writing Summer Moved On at times felt like being out on a high wire without a net.  New location (South Devon) and the need to get under the skins of another set of very different characters.  It was a long, tough journey but eventually I got there and am now hopefully looking at a publishing date of late July/early August.

The next project is the sequel, working title Coming Home, although I’m not sure whether that will stay.  This book will be easier because similar to the others in my first series, I’ve already done the ground work.  I know the setting and the characters and it’s all about wrapping the story around them.  I will be introducing one or two new individuals but they’ve been kept to a minimum.  It’s all about the reader reacquainting themselves with the characters from book one and finding out what happens next.

This will be a two book project; no I’m not about to venture into another series.  So what comes after?  Well that’s all in the lap of the gods.  When I finished The Other Side of Morning I had no idea what would come next, or if, indeed there was anything.  All it takes is an initial thought and that can come from so many places – seeing something on TV, reading a book, even overhearing someone’s conversation in a coffee shop or restaurant.  From that one germ of inspiration the writing begins.  I always have an outline of the plot but my experience has shown not to tie myself to a strict pathway. Things can change as the writing progresses so it’s a case of always keeping an open mind and expecting the unexpected.

BROOK COTTAGE BOOK TOUR: WALKING IN THE RAIN BY JULIA IBBOTSON, 8 – 19 JUNE 2015

Walking in the Rain Tour Banner 1

Genre: Contemporary women’s romance fiction

Release Date: 30th March 2015

How do you cope when your worst nightmare comes true?

WALKING IN THE RAIN_300dpiJess happily marries the love of her life. She wants to feel safe, secure and loved. But gradually it becomes clear that her beloved husband is not the man she thought him to be. She survived civil war and injury in Africa, but can she now survive the biggest trauma of her life?

This is the second novel in the Drumbeats trilogy but can be read as a standalone. However, Drumbeats is so amazing you should just read it too!

MY REVIEW

After reading Drumbeats I was really looking forward to this, the second book in the trilogy.  I wasn’t sure where the story would take us this time.  Would Jess return to Ghana to try to find her American love Jim?  Or would she rekindle her relationship with Simon, the boyfriend she left behind?  On her return home Simon breaks up with Jess but then returns unexpectedly to tell her he’s sorry and he wants her back.  Feeling Simon is the man she wants to share her life with she accepts his proposal and they marry.  For a while all is well, but as the marriage progresses and children arrive Jess finds herself caught in a nightmare as Simon personality begins to switch from Dr Jekyll to Mr Hyde and back.  The tragedy is that it appears nothing can be done to help her even when he becomes physically abusive.  His parents, who have given in to his every whim since he was a child, turn a blind eye refusing to accept there is a problem and even the law, it seems, is unable to protect her.  The writer really puts Jess through a roller coaster of an emotional ride and at times you are wondering how much more this poor woman can take as disaster after disaster strikes.  Do things work out for her in the end? Will she free herself from this nightmare? Well you will just have to read it and find out – and please do read it. It’s a great book about a brave woman coping with both physical and mental abuse from her very damaged partner, trying to hold everything together for the sake of the children.

I would like to thank the author for providing a courtesy copy in exchange for an honest review.

BROOK COTTAGE BOOKS PANDORA’S PROPHECY BY JULIE RYAN – BOOK TOUR 25 – 29 MAY 2015

Pandoras Prophecy Tour Banner ‘Pandora’s Prophecy’ is the third in the Greek Island mystery series but can be read as a standalone although some characters from the previous books do make an appearance.

Lisa and Mark are going through a rough patch, Vicky is seventeen and has just discovered that the man she thought was her father really isn’t, Ruth is getting over her husband’s betrayal after nearly twenty-five years of marriage. On the surface they have nothing in common except that they are all staying in the same hotel on a Greek Island. As they each come into contact with the mysterious Pandora, their lives will change forever. Bodies begin to pile up as a serial killer is on the loose who might just be targeting the hotel. The Island’s Police Chief, Christos Pavlides, tries to solve the puzzle but he has problems of his own to resolve. It seems that the local celebrity author is the one who holds the key.

MY REVIEW

No stranger to Julie’s writing, I was looking forward to this, the third instalment of her Greek Island Mystery series.  I have to say this, like the other books, did not disappoint.   It is beautifully written with such wonderful description.  I have holidayed in Greece in years past and it brought back all the sights and sounds of those much enjoyed vacations. At times I could even smell the food! The way the separate characters, including Pandora, were interwoven into the plot as the book progressed was wonderful.  Each has their own story to tell but at the same time are linked the  others by murder and mystery.  I loved the way the book is structured too. Julie teases you with one character, gets you to the end of the chapter with a real cliff hanger of a situation – and then when you turn the page into the next chapter you find yourself involved with one of the other characters.  This is what keeps you turning pages – you just have to know what happens next.   A truly great book – absolutely loved it and can’t wait for Julie’s next novel to  be published.

ABOUT THE AUTHOR

IMGP0755

Julie was born and brought up in a mining village near Barnsley in South Yorkshire. She graduated with a BA (hons) in French Language and Literature from Hull University. Since then she has lived and worked as a Teacher of English as a Foreign Language in France, Greece, Poland and Thailand. She now lives in rural Gloucestershire with her husband, son and two cats, a rescue cat and a dippy cat with half a tail.  She is so passionate about books that her collection is now threatening to outgrow her house, much to her husband’s annoyance, as she can’t bear to get rid of any! They have been attempting to renovate their home for the last ten years.

She is the author of the Greek Island Mystery series, Jenna’s Journey, Sophia’s Secret and Pandora’s Prophecy, each of which can be read as a standalone. She considers Greece to be her spiritual home and visits as often as she can. This series was inspired by her desire to return to Crete although there is a strong pull to revisit the Cyclades too.
