MY REVIEW

Very often when choosing a book to review, I decide on something completely different from my usual crime/ psychological thrillers.  On this occasion, I decided on Jessie Cahilin’s debut novel A Gift for Maisie Bloom.

Newly-qualified school teacher Maisie Bloom has been gifted Tanglewood Cottage by her Aunt Ada. Currently, Maisie is trying to come to terms with her aunt’s unexpected demise on a river cruise in Paris.  As she settles into life in the pretty Yorkshire village of Heatherbridge, she becomes convinced that Ada is still alive.  After all, the French police have not found a body. The more she pieces together information gathered through the neighbours and by reading her aunt’s blog, the more she is convinced she is alive and well, and busy in search of someone somewhere in Paris.  Knowing she will be unable to settle until she discover the truth, so  decides to go to France to search for her.

Growing up in a village, Maisie’s neighbours struck a cord, taking me back to my own childhood.  The many different personalities that go make up a community, their quirks and of course, their ability to assist when help is needed.  In this case,  all have one thing in common – a great affection for Maisie’s Aunt Ada.  They also tend to agree with her, that there’s a possibility she survived the boating accident.   It’s something that spurs her to take a leap of faith and head for Paris.

As well as the mystery, there’s the romance. Currently there are two men in Maisie’s life.  Handsome Felix who is never short of female company, and personal trainer Danny with his mop of blond frizzy hair and love of running. The question is, which, if any of them will prove more than just a distraction and win her heart?  It’s a roller coaster of a read with never a dull moment.

All in all, A Gift for Maisie Bloom is a highly enjoyable page turning story, filled with a cast of great characters,  an air of mystery,  of course,  most importantly, romance.

  1. What a great blog post. I have thoroughly enjoyed all of Jo’s books in the past and its great to learn about a new author’s debut novel. I can’t wait to read #2 . . . and the next Jo Lambert novel, too. Both will transport me to somewhere different.

  2. Thanks so much for featuring my novel on your blog. I am pleased you tried a genre unfamiliar to you. You capture the story well in your post, and I love your connection to the small community.
